Key Elements

Purpose-built facility to meet demands of today’s fire service; expanded apparatus bay with space for 13 emergency vehicles; on-site 911 dispatch for fast, coordinated response; living quarters with residential-style amenities

When the City of Elk City’s fire station no longer met required operational demands, the city asked REES to design a new station. Originally built in the 1950’s, the original fire station had limited space, outdated infrastructure and inadequate facilities, making it difficult to support a full fleet of emergency vehicles and provide services efficiently. The new station improves functionality, expands capacity and better serves the firefighters and community.

Functional Design for Modern Firefighting

The 20,000-square-foot fire station provides a modern, highly functional facility that enhances safety and quality of life for Elk City and the surrounding areas. At the entrance, a welcoming lobby leads into a flexible training room that supports both departmental education and community outreach. A nearby storage area houses essential medical training equipment and supplies.

Living quarters were designed with comfort in mind. The residential wing includes separate men’s and women’s bunk rooms, restrooms with full-height partitions and privacy screens as well as a break room that seats up to 16 people. The kitchen features a buffet-style setup for shared meals. A gym supports wellness with cardio and strength training equipment.

Durability was a key design driver. Concrete walls and power-washable floors ensure easy maintenance, with carpet used only in select areas. Exposed ductwork and industrial finishes reflect the rugged nature of firefighting, while helping to control project costs. A positive air pressure system helps keep out contaminants, protecting both the air system and personnel inside the station.

Supporting Response and Readiness

The new fire station strengthens Elk City’s emergency response capabilities on multiple fronts. A dedicated 911 dispatch unit within the facility ensures fast, coordinated communication during critical moments. The expanded apparatus bay accommodates 13 emergency vehicles, with generous space to prevent damage during rapid deployment. Designated “first-out” bays ensure the most frequently used vehicles can exit the station quickly without obstruction during emergency calls.

Funded by the CAPS2 Protect and Serve bond initiative, the new station reflects Elk City’s commitment to strengthening public safety and supporting those who protect the community.
