The City of Elk City Police Department sought REES to revamp its facility to better serve its officers and community. Currently under construction, the 15,000-square-foot renovation will improve security, enhance operational efficiency and meet the evolving needs of law enforcement.
Originally built in the 1980s, the existing facility faced space constraints and outdated infrastructure. REES strategically redesigned the layout to optimize departmental operations and introduce more collaborative spaces that support modern police work.
At the start of design, REES conducted a staff analysis for department personnel, exploring more functional workspaces and appropriately assigning areas. This process highlighted the need for a dedicated forensics lab. The lab will provide a secure, private environment for handling sensitive investigations. Previously sharing space with detectives, the forensics team will now operate in a confidential setting, boosting investigative efficiency. Evidence storage was also expanded, reallocating space to create high-density storage areas that securely manage critical evidence.
For greater operational control, the dispatch area was reconfigured. It now has improved visibility and monitoring capabilities, allowing dispatchers to oversee incoming officers and detainees while managing emergency calls. Jail upgrades include separate men’s and women’s sobering cells, a trustee room for low-risk detainees and day rooms for inmates. A new courtroom, which handles minor local disputes, seats up to 20 people. Equipped with ballistic-rated walls and other security measures, the courtroom provides a safe place for local legal proceedings. The redesigned facility also includes a larger conference room for collaborative staff meetings.
The renovations to Elk City’s police department reflect their commitment to both the staff and community, creating a space that will meet the evolving needs of the Elk City Police Department for years to come.
