The Zen Den Brings Pawsitive Relaxation to Bark + Build Dallas

REES recently partnered with Estes + Sinacori Builders to take part in the 11th Annual Bark + Build Design Competition, hosted by AIA Dallas and TEXO Association. The competition invites architects and builders to create imaginative pet houses with all proceeds supporting SPCA of Texas.

The Zen Den

The Zen Den is a peaceful outdoor space for bigger dogs. The design is inspired by Asian garden pavilions and focuses mainly on comfort and simplicity. The floor features tiles that resembles a koi pond. The back wall has a horizontal pattern that feels like flowing water. A small side area holds toys, tennis balls, food and water. A tiered roof helps air move through the space and keep the structure cool. The structure creates a welcoming place for pets to relax.

Behind the Design

The opportunity to participate in Bark and Build started with REES’ 50th Anniversary Community Engagement Committee. As a way of giving back to each of our communities, teams researched opportunities to impact local causes. Partnering with Estes + Sinacori Builders was an important part of the experience, giving us a chance to strengthen our relationship and find new ways to collaborate.

The team brainstormed early concepts, narrowed down options and ultimately selected The Zen Den. Toni Huerta shared, “Making sure the piece was structurally stable was important. Estes + Sinacori Builders gave some great solutions and helped us figure out how to have a good foundation. I enjoyed getting to be part of the team working towards a great cause.” We also worked closely with SPC Drywall, Inc. to bring the Zen Den to life.

Reflecting on the experience, Valarie Bourque said, “It was exciting to take the lead with Toni and see all the moving parts come together. This is the kind of project that reminds you how design can make a difference, even on the smallest scale.”

Seeing the Bark + Build Structures

The Zen Den and the other Bark and Build creations are on display at NorthPark Center now through December 21. They are located in front of AMC Theaters. Guests can view all the pet houses and vote for their favorites in person or at this link. Donations support SPCA of Texas, helping animals find caring homes. Special thanks to Estes + Sinacori Builders and SPC Drywall, Inc., as well as project captains Valarie Bourque and Toni Huerta for leading this year’s team!
