Key Function

Create a unified campus that supports clinical growth, staff well-being and long-term operational efficiency

As the Chickasaw Nation Medical Center was expanding its services, the existing campus had reached its limits. Administrative teams were embedded within clinical space, surgical demand continued to rise and staff amenities were limited. The Chickasaw Nation wanted a targeted expansion to expand patient services while also investing the people who deliver that care.

REES partnered with the Chickasaw Nation to plan and design a coordinated, campus-wide expansion that addresses these challenges holistically. The project includes a new Administration and Wellness Building, a renovated and expanded surgery department, and a five-story parking garage. Designed to flow together, the projects create a unified system that improves access, capacity and staff experience.

Surgery Unit Renovation and Addition

To support growing surgical demand, the project team designed a 35,000-square-foot renovation and addition that increases both current capacity and future flexibility. The expanded surgery department now includes six operating rooms, with space and infrastructure in place to support two additional ORs as volumes grow.

The operating rooms are organized around a central core, improving efficiency. Expanded PACU and recovery areas enhance patient throughput. A dedicated endoscopy rooms allow specialized procedures to be performed without disrupting surgical operations. A new sterile processing department was designed with a clear dirty-to-clean flow, reinforcing compliance and operational efficiency. Improved circulation patterns and wider corridors with dedicated alcoves support smoother movement for staff and equipment, reinforcing workflow efficiency throughout the building.

Maintaining uninterrupted patient care was a critical requirement. The new surgical suites were constructed directly above the existing imaging department, requiring careful coordination across structural, mechanical, electrical and medical gas systems. Through detailed planning and phased construction, the team successfully delivered the expansion while keeping essential hospital services fully operational.

Administration and Wellness Building

The 38,000-square-foot Administration and Wellness Building is a centralized hub for staff. It brings together amenities that make it easier for team members to take care of themselves throughout the workday. By relocating non-clinical teams out of the medical center, the building helps free up valuable clinical space and improves overall campus efficiency.

Exterior materials were selected to blend seamlessly with the existing campus, using familiar metal, stone and color palettes to maintain visual continuity. Inside, the design shifts toward an inviting atmosphere with abundant natural light, warm wood tones and elevated finishes. A two-story mural anchors the lobby, reflecting the Nation’s culture through art.

Staff-Focused First Floor

The first floor is dedicated to staff amenities that support health, wellness, and day-to-day collaboration. The Wellness Center includes a pickleball court, weight room and locker rooms, with flexible spaces that can accommodate group fitness classes or movement-based programming. A centrally located coffee shop provides a casual gathering space for breaks, informal meetings or social connection.

Training rooms and office suites support onboarding, professional development and small-group collaboration—giving staff dedicated spaces to learn, connect and work outside of clinical environments.

Executive and Support Spaces

The second floor brings executive leadership together in a cohesive, professional setting. Offices for the Secretary, Deputy Secretary and Under Secretary are located alongside their support teams, with a formal reception area welcoming visitors into the executive suite. Comfortable waiting areas and an executive conference room, featuring walnut millwork and leather-accented walls, create an elevated environment for high-level discussions. Additional staff amenities on this level include a large break room, smaller meeting rooms and breakout spaces.

Parking Garage and Pedestrian Bridge

The five-story parking garage has over 550 parking spaces, creating a better arrival experience for staff and visitors. The first floor is dedicated to visitor parking, with convenient access to the Administration and Wellness Building. A secure pedestrian bridge connects directly to staff areas within the hospital, offering a streamlined path across campus.

The garage’s exterior materials and color palette align with the broader campus aesthetic, reinforcing visual continuity and a cohesive arrival experience.

A Campus Designed for People and Performance

This project strengthens the Chickasaw Nation’s vision for a campus that supports both operational efficiency and their well-being of their staff. Through thoughtful planning and design, the expanded facilities improve clinical capacity, strengthen staff support systems and position the campus for long-term growth.

We are honored to have partnered with the Chickasaw Nation on a transformation that reflects their commitment to patients, staff and the future of healthcare in their community.
